SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER
It’s all go at Dirt HQ. We’ve moved out of our various home offices and we are now well and truly encamped in our new office. I say ‘office’ but it seems to have become a bit more of a drop–in centre for the local ‘hillsiders’. Not only do we get a mixed and varied selection of ‘locals’ of the human variety, but also seem to have the odd dog, chicken, badger…you name it, they’ve all been in here. Of course we also have the Dirt pig, but that is on the other side of the hill!

Issue 65

For a long time now the mountainbike world has been fascinated by America. After all it is were most of the big bike companies are based, were all the old school big name riders started out and where mountain biking itself was born (apparently). And where have we looked to? The west coast…Cal–i–forn–i–a. That is where it is at…or so you might think.

Issue 64

So it is 11.53am on Sunday May 13th. I am sitting here at home watching the rain chuck it down outside, eagerly anticipating a ping from the email or a beep as a text message comes through telling me who has just won the first World Cup of the year out in Spain. Women first, then the blokes. It has already been interesting. Firstly Jill Kintner gets beaten fair and square in the women’s 4X, then Gee Atherton rides his luck and takes the men’s, when (for no apparent reason) current World Cup and World Champion Michal Prokop decides to ‘lay it down’ on the last corner! And it is mixed fortunes for others. Dirt team rider Rob Breakwell doesn’t even make it out of Wales when a recurring back problem leaves him bedridden for most of the week…he’s understandably gutted. Then there is Rachel Atherton, so much to look forward to, but bang, broken wrist in practice. It’s hard you know. The world cup, and racing in general, really does have it all…there’s the ping…Sabrina Jonnier just won it by seven seconds…whoa.

Issue 63

Just so you know…it kind of all happened so quickly. Now I really have to cast my mind back on this; one minute I was finishing off our 10 year anniversary issue in the depths of rural Dorset, and then the next I was in a ‘media centre’ in London being told that all my dreams could come true. Now you see, I have always wanted Dirt to be monthly, I have always wanted to be able to go to my local newsagent and buy the magazine, I have always wanted a big team behind me, a new computer, a comfy office chair, a bike store room, an answer phone that I can hear, a new kettle, a colour printer that works…but most of all I have wanted opportunities for the magazine..

Dirt Issue 62

Alot of talk, sit in front of the same window in the past week next to me (poor you) and you would have seen snow, sleet, some black assed clouds, some serious downpours that flooded just about everywhere and very rarely some sun. What season could this possibly be but winter in Britain. I’m 44 this month, time appears to me to accelerate the older I get, double maths in 1975 at Oakdale Middle School felt like a day does to me now. As I have gotten older am I better at using my time?
