2006 World Cup Rounds 4 & 5

Pegging up a pair of riding socks worn wafer thin on the heel and still ripe from the weekend (even after a good thrashing in the clothes mixer) started me wondering about the possible winners. The party would still be going on in Brazil and someone would be stood around the bar with a pocketful of points.

Megavalanche 2006

The Megavalanche is the most amazing biking event ever. I say event because it is more than just a race. Of course the top guys are there to race but for most it is a battle, it is survival…it is real mountainbiking, and it is a life experience.

There are those who will always advocate a close finish rule to sport. Schladming, Austria, round three of the World Cup series and the final round of the first European leg, was no such race.

World Cup Finals, Schladming, Austria

It was a race that seemed to have all the ingredients for a classic showdown, where the precious tenths would be made up on a technical track in some of the darker root strewn corners of the Niedere Tauern, a mountain range south of Salzburg. A hot sunny day and an Englishman in charge of a commanding, and seemingly safe, lead in the series. ‘What if?’ had never even crossed anyone’s mind as Peaty and the rest of the Brits sipped some of the fizzy local Schladminger brew late in the week celebrating John Cheetham’s birthday.

World Championships 2006 - New Zealand

You know we did mean to go (there is a long list of excuses) but blah, blah, blah…but we didn’t. Which is a big shame, the World Championships is special, it really is that ‘pressure–pot’ race, a race that some love and have the ability to rise to the occasion, whilst others simply crumble and collapse. The current world champion Fabien Barel was on a roll and looking to make it three rainbow jerseys in a row in New Zealand, but an accident somewhere in Scandinavia literally shattered his hopes.
